SVEC Assessing Damage after Hurricane Irma

Posted: September 11, 2017

SVEC is experiencing widespread power outages due to Hurricane Irma.

6 of 8 transmission lines operated by Duke Energy Florida and Florida Power and Light are out.

41 of SVEC’s 43 feeder lines are out.

County Total Consumers Consumers Out % Out
Columbia 1,869 70 3.7%
Hamilton 3,785 3,554 93.9%
Lafayette 3,143 3,129 99.6%
Suwannee 16,854 15,732 93.3%
Total 25,651 22,485 87.7%

“We don’t know the full extent of the damage done to our system,” said SVEC, CEO Michael McWaters, “but our crews are already in the field assessing the situation.”

For your safety, stay away from downed power lines and do not attempt to remove vegetation from downed power lines.

SVEC’s policy is to make repairs that will restore service to the most people in the least amount of time. Substations are repaired first, followed by distribution lines that feed large groups of people such as entire neighborhoods. Smaller tap lines and individual service lines are then repaired to restore power to members who may still be without electricity.
