What factors influenced SVEC’s decision to change rates?

Several factors have contributed to this rate change. Rising costs have affected every industry, including ours, with increasing expenses for essential materials and equipment, like transformers, up to 125%.

On top of that, severe weather has taken a major toll on our cooperative. Hurricane Idalia in 2023 was unprecedented for our region and remains the costliest storm in our history. Just eight months later, the May North Florida Tornadoes struck, followed by flooding from Hurricane Debby, then the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Before Helene restorations were even complete, the outer bands of Hurricane Milton brought yet another round of inclement weather and damage to grapple with. As if all we experienced in 2024 weren’t enough, January brought the “rare and historic” Winter Storm Enzo to our service area.

Our cooperative has a responsibility to meet financial obligations and keep pace with evolving technology and long-term reliability. With rising costs and back-to-back challenges, a rate change has become an unavoidable necessity to support the level of service our members expect and deserve.
