Following Hurricane Debby, which brought high winds and torrential rains to Florida’s Big Bend region, Suwannee Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) has restored electric service to 27,473 (99%) of the co-op’s 27,714 consumer-members who lost power due to the storm. Crews continue working to restore members who are still awaiting power and can safely receive it.
Yesterday, SVEC crews and contractors achieved and surpassed the cooperative’s target of restoring power to at least 95% of its consumer-members in Hamilton and Columbia counties who could safely receive power by tonight.
Power has been restored for 26,046 (90.3%) of SVEC’s consumer-members. Once again, some crews will work through the night, while others will continue until about 9:00 this evening and then head out again tomorrow at first light.
During the night, power was restored to an additional 2,040 SVEC consumer-members. This morning, efforts continue with a workforce of 522 in the field. All substation feeders are now energized, which allows crews to focus on smaller tap lines and individual service lines. Hurricane Debby loomed over SVEC’s service territory for much of today, leaving about 96% of the cooperative’s consumer-members without power. At about 2:00 p.m. today, wind speeds finally subsided enough to allow damage assessments and power restoration to begin.
